Note: Because the race sponsor Dong-A Ilbo (magazine) erased the Japanese national flag from the picture of Olympic winner Ki-Jung Son, Japanese military authorities suspended both the magazine and the race that was to have been held in 1937. The 1982 race was co-held with the Seoul International Marathon but separate results were kept. The Dong-A Marathon became the Dong-A International Marathon in 1994 and then the Seoul International Marathon in 2004.  The 1990 race was held in conjunction with the Asian Championships.  The men's winner in 2006, Gert Thys (RSA) was later found guilty of using norandrosterone, a banned steroid, and was disqualified.  A subsequent appeal was upheld on the grounds that the same analyst tested both of his samples, in violation of the requirement that the tests be done by two different analysts.  In 2011, Abderrahim Goumri (MAR) finished 1st in 2:09:11 but was later disqualified for drug use.  Wilson Loyanai Erupe (KEN), a four time winner, tested positive for EPO on 4 Jan 2013 and because of a subsequent 2-year suspension (3 Feb 2013-2 Feb 2015) did not compete in the 2013 or 2014 race.

Race distances: For 1931-2 and 1934-36, the race distance was 50 ri's (about 23.3 km or 14.5 miles). For 1933, the race distance was 15 miles. For 1938-40 and 1954-63, the race distance is not known but appears to have been close to 25 km. 1983 was the first year that women were allowed to run the full marathon distance. The first year women were allowed to run was 1979 when they ran 10km. In 1981, the women ran 30km.

The race was held in Chunchon for 1992 and in Kyong-Ju for 1993-1999.
